Abi Lab is a research center for innovation that promotes collaboration between banks, companies and institutions.
Spunta Banca DLT is a project coordinated by ABI Lab aimed at applying the new DLT technology to the interbank process of Spunta.
The Spunta Banca DLT application allows banks to quickly identify mismatches in interbank transactions by sharing common data in a secure way; perform checks and exchanges directly within the application; use standardized processes and communications to correct problems.

Challenge
This project has been a deep dive in the banking sector. We met different challenges along the way. We organised different workshop and interviews with different bank in order to better understand the process. The goal was to design a software that’d be able to:
- replace the operator’s experience to recognize and solve problems.
- have a smart interface with the right amount of function.
- take in account the resolution of the monitor used by th team (UXGA)

First steps
Understanding the technology:
Blockchain technology basically allows everyone in the system to hold value and make transactions as strangers but in a completely transparent manner. There is no mediator in between two people making the transaction, and the entire process becomes easier and cheaper. This concept can be applied to the entire digital world, making any kind of exchange/transactions secure (not limited just to bitcoin). This report will take you through numerous such business models and companies that are beginning to sprout based on Blockchain technology .
The Blockchain network consists of nodes, i.e. distributed servers. All the nodes can accept and process the transaction. The nodes on the network share information about the candidate transaction. As much as the logic/tech part of it sounds confusing, the business models are so much more easier to understand and are really impressive.
Understanding the process:
Spunta is about the reconciliation of bilateral accounts (rather like nostro and vostro accounts) generally run by back offices that aim to clear every mismatch in double-entry book-keeping. After the automatic matching, the operators deal with the suspended transactions, i.e. the operations that need to be confirmed before being registered in the correspondent account. The implementation of a blockchain-based process using DLT for interbank reconciliation in Italy makes it possible to automatically detect non-matching transactions using a shared algorithm. Moreover, it leads to the standardisation of both the process and the single communication channel and provides a comprehensive view of the transactions among the interested parties. As a consequence, the principles of the new Spunta project envisage full visibility of transactions, including those of the counterparty; rapid management of flows with daily, rather than monthly, reconciliation; shared rules for the symmetrical reconciliation of transactions between counterparty banks; and the integrated management of communications and processes in the event of an imbalance.
